The Final Post

Its taken me forever to do this, due to moving into a new flat with my amazing husband but no internet. But here are the photos of the dress in all its wedding day glory!
Doing this was an amazing experience, I've learned a lot and I'm so glad I took that leap of faith. If anyone reading this is thinking of making their own dress, or a dress for a friend or family member, I'd say research well and think carefully about the amount of time you have, but if your hearts wants it then go ahead and do it!
I've enjoyed this so much, and gained so much confidence that one of my new years resolutions is to take on a couple of commissions this year - I'd love to do another wedding dress, a prom dress or some bridesmaids, so I'll be working on this site, thinking about things like contracts and advertising, and maybe even making up a couple of sample dresses.
Thanks for reading, I'll be trying to update my regular blog weekly from now on (starting with the last 3 months worth of sewing) so hopefully you'll keep reading!
Bye for now X

A last minute Job

As I was having my nephew as a ring bearer, I wanted to make him and his little brother waistcoats to match the bridesmaid. In a moment of extreme crazyness, I did this at the last minute (yep, final fitting on the way to the wedding rehearsal the night before the big event!)
But They looked very cute so it was worth it!
The pattern I used was a free download from the burda site, found

Just so you know....

I'm still working on the dress - 2 weeks to the wedding! And its pretty much done :D Its two buttons away from being wearable, then theres a few more small pieces of lace I'd like to sew on - when I put the dress on the dummy to pin the hem of the lining, I realised there were a few spots where it wasn't quite symetrical, and I'd like to fix them! But if I run out of time, I know that in fact I'm the only one who'd notice it (not to mention the only one who'd walk round and round the dress trying to spot imperfections!)
I'm 90% decided to leave the foundation bodice off - the difference it makes is so small I'm not sure its worth the discomfort - after all, I'm gonna be wearing it for more than 12 hours, I don't want to be in pain by the end of it! I think, if i ever get to make wedding dresses proffesionally, I'll take a short course and learn how to do it really well!
Final thing, petticoat needs a little work on the train supporting section - amoung other things at the moment its attached with pins which stick me in the bum every time I bend over!

No pictures, you'll have to wait an extra couple of weeks for the big reveal!

Bridesmaids dress

Yay, another thing finished! The bridesmaids dress started off as vie D of Butterick 5322, with the sleeves of view C cut short.
I tried pin fitting the pattern pieces of the fron and wasn't happy with either the neckline or the pleats, so I started from scratch and draped my own front.
Yes, i accidently did it left over right instead of right over left - I actually thought I'd done it wrong, looked in the mirror and thought I'd done it right, then by the time I realised I actually had done it wrong I'd put the pleats in and didn't care enough to go back and start again!
I'm really pleased with the pleats in the bodice and the way it fits, not so pleased with the sleeves - why does there always seem to be too much ease to be able to put a sleeve in smoothly? I took quite a lot off the sleeve cap on this one and still struggled. I think I should do some practise sleeves and see if I can figure out a formula to get it right every time.

Wedding date :(

Not a dress update, our wedding has had to be postponed - just one of those silly series of coincidences where no ones to blame and we couldn't have predicted it! Its proving a bit of a nightmare to find a date to rescedule to, but on the plus side I now have plenty of time to finish all the sewing I need to do and some I just want to do (and I'm focusing pretty hard on plus sides right now!)

Is nearly finished! I love the way it looks (and feels) in the satin, and the collar falls really well. Still to do, stitch on half the frogs and finish the bottom edge.

Stitching, stitching, stitching

No pictures to show you but I wanted to let y'all know I'm still working - stitching, stitching stitching lace onto net, all by hand! So far I've done all round the bottom, the two rows either side of the center back and a lot of the motifs on the skirt. Still lots to do but I'm feeling pretty in control - 6 weeks to go and I'm sure it'll be done in time :)

In fact it may be check list time again:
6 rows left to do on the bodice,
4 1/2 motifs to do on the skirt,
button loops and buttons to do on the lace
Final fitting adjustments
Attatch the lining to zipper and hem

In other news, I cut the satin and lining for the coat. I think I'll start putting that together tomorrow and will have some pics for you soon!

Positioning the lace

I was lucky enough to find a local sewing group, the thames valley offcuts, which meant I could go along to one of their meetings and finally have room to stand back and take a look at what I'm creating! My aim for the afternoon was to get everything pinned in place, which I managed (although a few of them have fallen off again since - stupid pins!)
From now on, I have loads and loads of hand sewing to do. I had planned to stop updating here but I've realised that I need the motivation! So far, I've stitched on the trim around the bottom, down one side of the back opening and a few of the motifs on the skirt. The plan is to do a little each day so I don't end up with a sore back.

The Coat

For part of the wedding day I will need to have full length sleeves and a high neck line, so I've decided that rather than a separate dress or a bolero, I want a full length coat to go over the top. The pattern I'm using is Marfy S708 and I have to admit, all the good things people have said about them are true! The mock up fits perfectly - looks good and is comfortable. I have whit polyester duchess satin for the coat, I wanted something that wouldn't require any underlining and which would have a subtle shine.
